A quick way to get bells without hacks or cloning is the island. I'm sure you've already heard this method but it is one of the best ways. It's commonly known in Animal Crossing New Leaf that the golden stag beetle that can be found on the island is the most rare beetle that sells for 120,000 bells. If you don't know what the golden stag looks like, then here's a picture:
The golden stag beetle is difficult to catch, very difficult. To catch the golden stag you have to walk up to it, very slowly and let down your net right at the shadow of the tree. The golden stag is very rare so it's unlikely that you'll find a lot of them in a short amount of time. They can be found in the summer season at night - morning. Getting just one or two of these can get you quite a few bells, so you don't need to get a lot of them. Other stag beetles can also sell for a bit but the golden stag is the way to go.
If you don't have the time or patience to go beetle hunting on the island, you can also sell fruit and fossils. Selling peaches and non assessed wont get you very far, but selling other fruits that aren't your town fruit will get you more bells than your town fruit can. And fossils can get you up to 4,000 bells per fossil.
Fruit selling prices can vary from the different types, the most being 500 bells. The prices of fossils do not change from fossil to fossil, they stay at the selling price of 4,000.
